A monopole antenna, which is a variation of the dipole antenna, consists of a 1/4 λ (wavelength) long conductor usually perpendicular to a large conductor > 1 λ known as the ground plane. As the 1/4 λ element is folded parallel to or towards the ground plane to reduce its profile, the capacitance between the two conductors is increased. Examples of such antennas include the Folded monopoles, Top-loaded antenna, T-aerial, and Umbrella antenna. Short circuiting the two antenna elements near the antenna feed using an inductive element negates the induced capacitance, thus improving the impedance matching over a narrow band of frequencies.Not to be confused with the folded dipole.Variations of monopole antennas:The S11 of monopole, folded monopole, inverted-f antennas depicted above is shown here. Folding a monopole antenna to become a folded-monopole antenna results in reduced matching and bandwidth. Shorting a folded-monopole antenna to become a shorted-folded-monopole antenna improves both matching and bandwidth. Shorted-folded-monopole antenna has less bandwidth than a monopole antenna. This is due to the reduction in the antenna aperture. Shorted-folded-monopole antenna has a lower resonant frequency than a monopole antenna.".
