- _Groovy_Love_Vibes abstract "Smoking Popes / Groovy Love Vibes is a split EP by the Chicago-based pop punk bands the Smoking Popes and the Groovy Love Vibes, released in 1993 by Johann's Face Records. It was the Smoking Popes' first release with Johann's Face, who would go on to issue their debut album Get Fired later that year. It was also the first Smoking Popes release to include Eli Caterer on second guitar, joining his brothers Josh and Matt who had founded the band in 1991. All tracks were recorded April 3, 1993 at Solid Sound Studio in Hoffman Estates, Illinois with recording engineer Phil Bonnet, the same location and engineer used for their previous EPs Break Up and 2.Each side of the EP includes one original song by the respective band and one cover song featuring a duet with the other band's lead singer. The Smoking Popes cover "Leather and Lace", originally performed by Stevie Nicks and Don Henley on Nicks' Bella Donna album, with Groovy Love Vibes singer Erik Pertl singing Henley's parts. The Groovy Love Vibes cover The Lovin' Spoonful's "Good Time Music", with Pertl and Josh Caterer alternating the lead vocals.The Smoking Popes' tracks from the EP were reissued in 2010 on the compilation album It's Been a Long Day. The original tapes could not be found, so the tracks had to be transferred from an old copy of the 7". Josh Caterer remarked in his liner notes that he was "just glad ['Leather and Lace'] is finally seeing the light of day again because it's always been one of my favorite moments from our early career. At the record release show in Elgin, which I'm pretty sure was the only time we ever played it live, Erik [Pertl] came up next to me at the microphone, and when it was his turn to sing, he shoved me out of the way. Theatrically speaking, it was a great move. But after that, I think I was too scared to ask him to sing it with me anymore."".
