- Stephen_Eckert abstract "Father Stephen Eckert was born Huron County in the Dublin, Ontario area on April 28, 1869 to John and Cunnicunda Eckert nee Arnold. He was baptized at St. Columban Parish and was given the name of John by his parents. His parents had immigrated from Germany in the 1850s. They were a strong Catholic family of which prayer and education were important, and John studied at St. Jerome's in Waterloo. It was at this time that he became ordained and took the name of Father Stephen.He then worked hard for many years before he was sent to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to be the pastor of St. Benedict the Moor parish as their first resident pastor. The parish had been established for the African-Americans in the area. Fr Stephen treated the community like his own children and opened schools for his parishners and people came from great distances to attend the schools that Fr Stephen set up. It was while out doing fundraising in support of his parish and school that Fr Stephen became ill and passed away on February 16, 1923. He was buried in the town where he fell ill, however in 1948 his body was exhumed and he was reinterred in the churchyard of the parish he dedicated his life to.On October 5, 1954 Bishop Cody of the Diocese of London opened the cause for Father Stephen to become a saint. In 1955 he was declared a Servant of God.In 1962, a Knights of Columbus council was started in the community where Fr Stephen was raised was started and named in his honour. A number of Fr Stephen's family have been involved in the over 50 yrs of this council.".
