- Strigimorphae abstract "Strigimorphae is a proposed clade of neoavians that include owls and their nearest relatives as the result of the extensive DNA-DNA hybridization studies conducted in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s by Charles Sibley and Jon Edward Ahlquist. Their original Strigimorphae contain the orders Musophagiformes (turacos) and Strigiformes (owls and the addition of including caprimulgiform, goatsuckers and allies, families). However the latest studies do not agree with this arrangement as these studies show turacos relatively close to Aequornithes (which include birds such as loons and herons) and the caprimulgiforms are more likely a paraphyletic lineage within Cypselomorphae (which also include the apodiforms, the hummingbirds, the swifts and treeswifts). Instead studies after Livezey & Zusi, 2007, Hackett et al., 2008, Nesbitt, Ksepka & Clarke, 2011, and McCormack et al., 2012 show that trogons and mousebirds to be the owls' closet relatives. Where they fit in (if they are indeed relatives) on the avian tree is a matter of debate; alternately strigimorphs could simply be falconimorphs related to falcons or belong to a different part of the neoavian tree closer to Coraciae (birds like woodpeckers, kingfishers and hornbills). Here is the following is a basic taxonomy of extinct and extant families at the family level: Strigimorphae Trogoniformes Trogonidae Coliiformes †Sandcoleidae (fossil; basal coliids?) Coliidae Strigiformes †Protostrigidae (fossil) †Ogygoptyngidae (fossil) †Palaeoglaugidae (fossil) †Sophiornithidae (fossil) Tytonidae Strigidae↑ ↑ ↑ ↑".
