- TeenAIDS-PeerCorps abstract "TeenAIDS-PeerCorps (TA-PC) is a nonprofit organization currently based in Norfolk, Virginia, with a satellite office in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. It was founded in 1994 by Dr. John B. Chittick and was based on his doctoral research at Harvard University (Ed.D.) that predicted a rapidly growing pandemic among sexually active adolescents. Originally established in Boston, Massachusetts, it officially became a 501(c)(3) organization in 1997. Chittick has served as the executive director since its inception. The goal of TeenAIDS-PeerCorps (also known as TeenAIDS) is to train young peer volunteers to educate their generation about its vulnerability to HIV. After receiving his doctorate, Chittick lectured on AIDS vulnerability at Harvard School of Public Health's François-Xavier Bagnoud Center under Dr. Jonathan Mann and Professor Daniel Tarantola.TA-PC serves youth at the local, national and international levels. The name TeenAIDS-PeerCorps originated from the emergence of a major health problem: HIV/AIDS among Teens and the solution: a Corps of young Peers (pronounced like Marine Corps). Dr. Chittick filed the service mark for PeerCorps in 1997. TeenAIDS and PeerCorps were first used on itswebsite with the url of “.com” before the URL was replaced by “.org” for non-profit organizations.TeenAIDS continues to host the internet’s first website that has targeted teens about HIV/AIDS since mid-1994, and it sponsors Dr. Chittick’s unique Global AIDS Walks to educate youth on six continents (86 countries to date). It introduced the first interactive webcasts on World AIDS Day by satellite uplink starting in 2006 from diverse locations such as Harvard University and Kinshasa, Congo D.R. In October 2012, TeenAIDS became the first entity in the U.S. to conduct live HIV testing of youth in public venues when Dr. Chittick began an experimental pilot program in the Hampton Roads region of southeastern Virginia. Using the new oral swab test kits approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for over the counter sale to anyone 17 and older, tests are free to youths that sign consent waivers According to Chittick, older youth were agreeable to being tested when among friends. Since most teens choose not to get tested because they do not think they are at risk, sexually active youth need to be educated about the home tests.".
