- Templeton_Gap_Floodway abstract "The Templeton Gap Floodway is a 6.5-mile-long (10.5 km) stream in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in the US. From its source in the northeastern part of Colorado Springs, the stream flows west and southwest until it eventually joins Monument Creek near N Nevada Ave and Mt View Ln. The floodway is named for the natural "gap" between several sandstone bluffs through which it flows. The Templeton Gap Floodway was, previous to 1949, the "upper half" of Shooks Run (a small stream which now flows from Patty Jewett Golf Course south into Fountain Creek near downtown Colorado Springs). Several damaging floods in the late 1800s and early 1900s along Shooks Run created significant concerns within the community about future flood events. In response to these concerns, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers build the Templeton Gap Floodway in 1949. Where the stream used to flow south (along the now-fragmented Templeton Gap Rd) past the Colorado Springs Country Club, it now makes an abrupt turn to the west before going under Union Blvd and into Monument Creek about 2 miles further west. In order to break the Shooks Run drainage in half, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed a large earthen-levee (the only levee in Colorado Springs or El Paso County) which essentially collects all stream and stormwater flowing from northeastern Colorado Springs and directs it into Monument Creek as quickly as possible.Since the building of the levee, several other projects have occurred along floodway to further-control the stream. Between 1949 and present day, large portions of the Templeton Gap Floodway (and the entirety of its minor tributaries, in most cases) became lined with concrete. In some stretches, only the stream's banks are armored with concrete. In other stretches, however, as near the intersection of Austin Bluffs Pkwy and N Union Blv, the stream is entirely encased within concrete.".
