- The_Cupola_Era_Endowed_Chair abstract "The Cupola Era Endowed Chair is a grant made by the University of California, to fund a junior faculty member of either the Department of Chemistry or the Department of Chemical Engineering. The endowment was brought about by alumni of UC who come from what is known in the Chemistry Department as "the Cupola Era" (the years between 1946 and 1963), a time when "remarkable contributions to science arose out of the College of Chemistry at Berkeley, when such luminaries as Professors William Giauque, Glenn Seaborg and Melvin Calvin were teaching and winning national and international awards." Their goal was to reach a target of half a million dollars, to then be invested, and the income derived to be used to provide financial assistance to assistant professors in establishing their research during the critical years before they are able to secure significant outside funding. The Chair was established by alumni who felt that "the excellence of the college’s programs can no longer be sustained through public funding alone. Private funding has become crucial to protecting and enhancing the strength of the College of Chemistry." Richard Lundquist PhD 1955. This private funding has been used to endow several Assistant Professors since its inception, for example Naomi Ginsberg and Thomas Maimone. The students of the Cupola Era have taken it upon themselves to establish this Chair, for reasons such as that stated by Daisy Yep Quan, (B.S. ’47): "I support the College because the future of our country depends on technology, and the College fits into what is important to the future”, and a sense of gratitude for the education received in more well funded times. “The reason I support Cal is fundamental: Cal opened doors to start my career, and the training and education I got there put me in a good position when I started working at Unocal and later in starting my Masters’ programs.” Milton Ritchie, (B.S. ’51) Funding continues to increase over time in the face of decreasing government funds.[citation needed]".
