- Theatre_for_a_New_Audience abstract "Theatre for a New Audience (TFANA) is performing arts organization founded in New York City in 1979 by Jeffrey Horowitz, who still leads the organization as its Artistic Director. Its mission is to "develop and vitalize the performance and study of Shakespeare and classic drama." The organization gives performances for general audiences in Off Broadway theaters and, under a New York City Board of Education-sponsored program, conducts workshops in schools before and after the performances. Since its first season, TFANA has produced over 60 classic works, including 28 of Shakespeare’s plays alongside other contemporary plays, including Edward Bond’s Chair, W.S. Gilbert’s Engaged, Howard Brenton’s Sore Throats, and Adrienne Kennedy’s Ohio State Murders, which was named "one of the ten best productions of 2007" by The New York Times. Since its founding, it has produced for audiences on and Off-Broadway and has toured nationally and internationally. The Theater’s productions have been recognized by a number of awards. (See below) In late 2013, it will move into its new, permanent home, currently being built in the new Brooklyn Cultural District.Notable artists who have worked with TFANA over the years include: directors Sir Peter Hall, Peter Brook, Doug Hughes, Bartlett Sher, Julie Taymor, Darko Tresnjak, Kate Whoriskey, Robert Woodruff, and Evan Yionoulis; and actors F. Murray Abraham, Kathleen Chalfant, Stephen Spinella, and Mark Rylance. For the first 30 years of its existence, TFANA was an itinerant company, offering performances in rented space at the Duke on 42nd Street or touring productions around the USA and abroad. TFANA productions have appeared at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego and Intiman Theatre in Seattle. It also mounted co-productions with New York Theatre Workshop, American Repertory Theatre Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Houston’s Alley Theatre, and Shakespeare’s Globe in London.".
