- UZPress_Online abstract "The University of Zululand Press, otherwise known as the UZPress was established in August 2005 by Tendani Maemu, an IT student and web-developer with the help of several other students under the Patronage of Thabo Leshoro, the Public Relations Officer of the University. Tendani's idea of establishing the online media platform was create an environment that would provide practical experience to a diversity of fields offered by the University, then. Another notable contributor to the "UZPress" was Lesetja Malope as the editor in the year 2007. As from the year 2008, UZPress did not have any publication until 2010 August, when Tsepo Emmanuel Ndhlovu, and once more under the patronage of Thabo Leshoro and Public relations department director, Shalo Mbatha of the University of Zululand, then, took a spin. The ideas were still the same as what Tendani Maemu and his team had earlier developed, and they acted as the back-bone of the organisation. It is said that Tsepo was looking into establishing his own newspaper when he met Thabo Leshoro, he introduced to him the "UZPress". In late April 2011, the UZPress website was shut down by the University of Zululand for publishing sensitive information regarding a rape case. The article, written by Tsepo, indirectly suggested that the University was accountable for the rape, as they closed and chased away all registered students for violent protest. According to media reports, the university feared that students would vandalise its property. The website was later put back online. No article was published thereafter. At the beginning of 2012, Tsepo Emmanuel Ndhlovu resigned as the chairperson of the University of Zululand Press, but retained his membership. He maintained that he resigned to focus more on his academic work. However, he continued writing for Ukzn-Nux (Independent student newspaper of the University of KwaZulu Natal), and is producing a radio show on Icora 100.4FM. Some speculate that his resignation had more to do with his writing freedom being restricted, and lots of supervision and policies installed by the Norma Zondo as the current public relations director of the University of Zululand in the institutions aim to protect its image.".
