- Valdezia abstract "Valdezia is a sprawling rural settlement situated 10 km east of Elim Hospital in the Hlanganani district in the former Gazankulu homeland, South Africa. Formerly known as Klipfontein, it was the site of a Swiss mission station, and it was named after the Swiss canton of Vaud. Valdezia became a bastion of Swiss colonisation in Africa, of all other Swiss mission stations in Africa, Valdezia is the biggest and the most important Swiss enclave in the whole African continent. As a vital Swiss colony, the whole Valdezia village is still owned and managed by the Swiss agency known as the Presbyterian Church of South Africa. Unlike in the past where the Swiss missionaries used to run the village and the church, the current leadership of the Presbyterian Church is composed solely by Tsonga people, but the Church in Switzerland still take some of the major decision concerning the activities of the church and the village of Valdezia.During the heyday of Swiss colonisation of Valdezia, there were more than 1,000 white Swiss Citizens staying at both Valdezia and Elim respcetively. Swiss missionaries withdrew from Valdezia and Elim in 1994 when the dawn of democracy came to South Africa. The only thing that is left at Valdezia are the graves of missionaries and their families, the graves are in bad conditions as there are no Swiss community to take care of the graves. Valdezia is a large village; its population, according to the official census of 2011, currently stands at between 7,600 and 8,000 people.Valdezia became the de facto 'capital city' of the Tsonga people, with Joao Albasini acting as their tribal paramount chief. It was known by the Boers as 'Spelenkon', meaning caves in Dutch and became home to thousands of Tsonga refugees fleeing the formation of the Gaza empire under Soshangane. Chief Nhjakanhjaka, who was a headman of Spelenkon, exercised authority over thousands of Tsonga refugees, but Joao Albasini, a Portuguese adventurer of 'mixed blood' or half caste, also contested for power over the control of the thousands of Tsonga refugees in the Spelenkon district, at the end, Chief Nhjakanhjaka was undermined when Joao Albasini declared himself a paramount chief of all Tsonga people in the whole Spelenkon district . When the Swiss Missionaries arrived in 1875, Valdezia was already occupied and largely populated by the Tsonga people. It is the birthplace of the written Tsonga language in South Africa, Tsonga was first written here in 1875. The Swiss Missionaries later established other Mission Stations in other Tsonga areas, the most other important Swiss Mission Stations that were established by the Swiss were at Nhjakanhjaka village, (Elim Mission Station, 1878, next to Elim Hospital) and at Shirley Village (Shirley Mission Station in 1890), also at Nhjakanhjaka village, next to Waterval township. The 'Valdezia Ward' at Elim Hospital was named after Valdezia. The Ward was officially opened in 1975, the 100 year anniversary of the founding of the Swiss Mission Station in South Africa. Because the Swiss Missionaries were celebrating the 100 year anniversary in Valdezia, the newly built ward at Elim Hospital was therefore named Valdezia ward by the Gazankulu Government. Six years earlier in 1969, another ward at Elim Hospital was built and named Giyani Ward, the 'Giyani Ward' was named so because the first Gazankulu legislative assembly was convened at Giyani in 1969 and the newly built Ward at Elim Hospital was therefore called 'Giyani Ward' in honour of the Gazankulu capital city. The Swiss Missionaries who started Valdezia Mission Station are the same Missionaries who started Elim Hospital in 1899. Therefore the roots of Elim Hospital are in Valdezia since the pioneers, i.e. the Swiss Missionaries', made an extension of the original Valdezia Mission Station at Nhjakanhjaka Village, and named it Elim Mission Station, Elim Hospital was born immediately after the founding of the new Mission Station at Nhjakanhjaka village.".
