- William_Weipers abstract "Sir William Lee Weipers, FRCVS FRSE, was a pioneering Scottish veterinary surgeon and educator.Weipers was borne in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire in 1904. A son of the manse, he was educated at Whitehill Higher Grade School in Glasgow, and went on to graduate MRCVS from the Glasgow Veterinary College in 1925. He went into general practice from 1925 until 1949, apart from a period of two years (1927 to 1929) when he became a member of staff of the Royal (Dick) Veterinary College.A highly skilled and pioneering small animal surgeon, he introduced closed circuit anaesthesia to veterinary practice and was widely respected throughout UK for his skill at small animal orthopaedics. When the private veterinary colleges were brought into the ambit of the university system, he was made the first Director of Veterinary Education at the University of Glasgow (1949–1974); Professor of Veterinary Surgery from 1951 to 1974, and the Dean of the Glasgow Veterinary Faculty from 1969 until 1974. During this time he masterminded the creation of a veterinary school which became renowned for the quality of its teaching and in particular its research, for which it became the highest rated Veterinary Faculty in any British university, a position it retains to the present. He was knighted in 1966 for his services to Veterinary Education. One of Weipers' greatest gifts was his ability to spot talent in young students and to mentor their careers for long after. Among those who have readily acknowledged his help and support in their writings and in lectures are Nobel Laureate Sir James W. Black FRS, and distinguished veterinarians such as Sir James Armour, Professor WFH Jarrett FRS, Professor RJ Roberts FRSE and Professor M Murray FRSE, all of whom have presented the Weipers Memorial Lecture, a biennial lecture in his honour at the University of Glasgow. His career was greatly supported by his wife Mary née McLean, a Gaelic-speaking veterinary graduate from Barra who died in 1986. They had one daughter, Janet. On his retirement Weipers devoted much of his time to arboriculture but also played a defining role in the establishment of academic aquaculture, as chairman of the management committee of the Nuffield Institute of Aquaculture, at the University of Stirling, guiding this to similar levels of academic excellence to those he had created in Glasgow. For this he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of the University in 1978.He was later awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery by his alma mater (1982).A generous, witty and gregarious man, Weipers was an excellent raconteur and particularly successful at negotiating with those in high places who were in a position to help his beloved School. One senior civil servant was heard to declare after a meeting with him that he had "thought he had gone in to the meeting to buy wool from Weipers but afterwards realized he had come out shorn."[citation needed]Weipers career was decidedly bisected, with a long period as one of the finest small animal veterinary surgeons in the country being followed by an equally long period as it foremost veterinary educator. When he arrived at the Glasgow Veterinary College in 1949 it was of such low repute it was close to closure or merger with the Royal (Dick) College in Edinburgh. When he retired there were few who would disagree that its research rating as the top school in UK was well merited.Sir William Weipers died in 1990 at the age of 86.".
