- World_Youth_Day_1995 abstract "World Youth Day 1995 was a Catholic youth festival that took place from January 10–15, 1995 in Manila, Philippines. It was the first time for an Asian country to host the event. Pope John Paul II (now St. John Paul II) presided over the event, marking his second trip to the country as Pope, the first being in 1981.A week before the celebration of the World Youth Day proper, two (2) representatives from each countries all over the world gathered for an INTERNATIONAL YOUTH FORUM (IYF) at University of Sto. Tomas (UST). In the Philippines there are eight (8) representatives sent, two (2) coming from the Western Visayas, Benjamin "Junnie" Mamolo and MA. GINA LINGA (ABIOG), while others were from the different Catholic religious youth organizations and campuses. These were the selected youth leaders and coordinators. during their five days / night stay in UST, representatives were grouped and discussed among themselves on issues and concerns that have been laid by the in charge of the Episcopal Commission on Youth where in subject matters have been sent months ahead prior to the event for each of the ministry of the youth to share this in the respective parishes and youth organization. The INTERNATIONAL YOUTH FORUM (IYF) was also a venue wherein few from these selected youth representative had able to have a short face to face talk and embraced and kissed the Holy Father. There was also a celebration of the Holy Eucharist wherein some few youth had a chance of receiving communion directly from the Pope's saintly hand.Youth pilgrims gathered from different parts of the world to worship together, learn of each other's cultures, and to talk amongst one another as "brothers and sisters." The event was celebrated with different activities including a "Barrio Fiesta," where assigned groups would gather to socialize and have fun. Masses were celebrated every day in almost every Catholic Church in the Philippines. The closing Mass, held at Luneta Park, was estimated to have been attended by more than 5 million people; current world record for the largest Papal gathering in Roman Catholic history. Some have even suggested it may have been the largest Christian gathering ever, although this is not certain. The official theme song of this event is "Tell the World of His Love," composed by renowned Filipina songwriter Trina Belamide and performed by Carelle Mangaliag and Jeff Arcilla. This was Pope John Paul II's last visit to the Philippines. It had been intended that he would visit again for the World Meeting of Families in 2003, but he was unable to do so due to advancing health problems. Ramzi Yousef attempted to assassinate the Pope in the Bojinka Plot but the plan was discovered four days earlier and was forced to flee to Pakistan.".
