- Charles_Strine abstract "Charles W. Strine (1867 - April 7, 1907) was a theatrical and opera official who managed the Ellis Opera Company in its 1898 and 1899 cross-country tours and Sarah Bernhardt during her 1905 - 1906 tour of the United States. In 1904 he was engaged as associate manager of the Tivoli Opera House in San Francisco, California and the following year he assumed responsibility for the highly successful (and lucrative) San Francisco residency of Conreid's Metropolitan Opera Company. Earlier Strine had been a co-manager of the Grand Opera House in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he was born. Strine had a second career in the newspaper industry, particularly with The Philadelphia Record.Strine left Bernhardt in 1906 to undertake management of the entire cross-county tour of the Conried Metropolitan Opera Company. The tour ended disastrously after the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake with Shrine losing all of his profits. A few days before the quake, he had been named manager of a proposed new 2000-seat San Francisco theatre, which never materialized due to the earthquake and subsequent fires. He died in 1907 at Boothby Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, a week after unsuccessful surgery for an appendicitis".
