- Dennison_Wheelock abstract "Dennison Wheelock (June 14, 1871 – March 10, 1927) was the most accomplished American Indian composer, conductor and cornet soloist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In the early years of the 20th century, Wheelock was compared to John Philip Sousa, and even nominated to be bandmaster of the United States Marine Band. Born in the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, educated at Carlisle Indian School and Dickinson Preparatory School, Wheelock was bandmaster of the internationally acclaimed Carlisle Indian School Band performing at world fairs, expositions and presidential inaugurals. Wheelock was the composer of the Sousa inspired Carlisle Indian School March, and in 1900 debuted his three part symphony Aboriginal Suite, an American Indian opera, at Carnegie Hall. Wheelock was a founder of the Society of American Indians, the first national American Indian rights organization developed and run by American Indians. Wheelock later set-aside the baton for the practice of law in Wisconsin, then moving to Washington D.C., arguing cases for Indian nations in the U.S. Court of Claims and the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1980, in his honor and the celebrated Carlisle Indian Band, Dennison Wheelock's Bandstand was reconstructed on the site of the original at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.".
