The magazine is sometimes considered as the Indian version of The Nation, an esteemed New York weekly. In 2014, it is estimated that these numbers have increased to 13,000 print and 5,000 online subscribers.The magazine was first published in 1949 as the Economic Weekly (edited by Sachin Chaudhuri), and since 1966 was re-christened the Economic and Political Weekly. It was edited by Krishna Raj for more than three decades. The present editor is C. Rammanohar Reddy, an IIM graduate and a former economics editor of The Hindu.The EPW publishes both scholarly research and information about current events.One reference in geographical research stated that For keeping up with scholarly research as well as current events, there is no better journal than the Economic and political weekly from Bombay. In addition to news, editorial comment and book reviews, the Weekly carries academic articles by top scholars, especially in its twice-yearly special issues.In another instance historian Ramachandra Guha rued that in terms of persuading young scholar in publishing their work in EPW "...When such a scholar chooses an American journal in preference to the EPW, it is not difficult to conclude that for him (or her) ‘India’ is merely a resource on the road to scholarly advancement."EPW is known to take leftist stances on current affairs and its pages have for decades been open to writers who have highlighted the challenges facing the disadvantaged.".
