- Elizabeth_Isham abstract "Elizabeth Isham (c.1608-1654) of Lamport Hall is known for her diary, which is considered one of the earliest known examples of an diary written by a woman. Her writings offer a glimpse into the life of a female member of the 17th-century English aristocracy.Elizabeth Isham was baptized on 5 February 1608 at Lamport, Northamptonshire. Her parents were Sir John Isham, 1st Baronet of Lamport, and Judith Lewin, the daughter of William Lewin, an Anglican judge. Her brother Justinian Isham, the 2nd Baronet from 1651 on, was a respected scholar and briefly a Member of Parliament. She is remembered for two diaries that record the domestic and spiritual aspects of her life at Lamport Hall in Northamptonshire. Her first diary is made up of annual observations that detail her home life from her early childhood up to the year 1648, when she was forty years old. It is preserved among the Isham papers at the Northamptonshire Record Office. Her second diary is a longer, more confessional work on her inner thoughts that concludes when she was about thirty years old. She titles it her Booke of Remembraunce, and it was "hidden" for many years in the Princeton University Library until recently being "rediscovered" by scholars in the University manuscript collection.Although she was interested in marriage, negotiations between her father and the family of suitor John Dryden, the grandson of Sir Erasmus Dryden, 1st Baronet, stalled, and she remained a spinster. She lived out her life at Lamport Hall, where after the death of her mother she looked after various aspects of her father's household, and later watched over her brother's children. She died after a short illness on 11 April 1654 and is buried in the Lamport parish church with other members of her family.".
