- Korey_Sufka abstract "Korey Sufka is an author, motivational speaker, and the founder of the Powerless to Purpose Foundation which was created and developed in 2008 as a foundation that assists central Minnesota high school students that are experiencing issues related to drug/alcohol abuse with the help needed to get into treatment or to get the necessary help needed so they can get their lives back on track. The Powerless to Purpose Foundation was originally started by Korey Sufka and his girlfriend Mary Williamson in 2006 and was called D.A.M.A.G.E. (Dads Against Meth-Amphetamine Go Educate). The name D.A.M.A.G.E. was later changed to Powerless to Purpose because Korey felt at that time it was more fitting because during his speaking events there is much more discussed and shared other than just issues related to methamphetamine. Korey Sufka was born on August 5, 1977 to Susan LaSota and to Richard Sufka in Little Falls, MN. Korey grew up in Royalton, MN and for the first 12 years of his life he would call Royalton home. Korey has an older brother and an older sister and spent his younger years in Royalton fishing, playing sports, and hanging out with friends. When Korey was about 10 years old his mother was diagnosed with M.S. and after a divorce between his mother and father Korey and his mother moved to Sauk Rapids, MN when he was 15 years old. While living in Sauk Rapids, Korey attended high school although he quickly found himself feeling depressed and feeling lonely. Korey found a few people he later would call friends that felt the same way he did and the group started smoking marijuana and committing crimes for attention and profit. Korey would spend the next few years being sent away to various juvenile correctional facilities until he turned 18 years old. Korey was sent away to Brainerd Port Group Home, Brainerd C.M.R.D.C., Sauk Centre Boys Home, Thistledew Youth Facility, and McCrossan Boys Ranch in South Dakota just to name a few. After his 18th birthday Korey was released from the McCrossan Boys Ranch and lived out in South Dakota working at a grocery store, coaching youth baseball, and played baseball as well. After a few years living in South Dakota, Korey chose to move back to Minnesota. When Korey returned to Minnesota he quickly found himself associating with the same friends and making the same choices. Korey again started smoking marijuana, selling cocaine, and eventually started using cocaine too. During this time Korey would take a tour of correctional facilities this time however it would be county jails. Korey would eventually be jailed over 20 times! After the house Korey was living in got raided by the drug task force, Korey moved in with another friend and was introduced to methamphetamine. For the next several years Korey abused methamphetamine and was eventually sent to Minnesota Correctional Facility Lino Lakes Prison in 2005. It was there where Korey started to read books and started the healing process that included forgiving himself for the mistakes he made over the course of his life. Korey's mother died while he was in prison and Korey made a promise to himself that he would create a foundation that would help prevent others from making the same mistakes that he made. After his release Korey started speaking at local churches and high schools and with the support he received from Mary decided to start the D.A.M.A.G.E. Foundation and continued speaking all over the country. Korey has been with Mary for the past 10 years and together they share a beautiful daughter named Kaileigh and live in central Minnesota. Korey and Mary spend their spare time fishing in the summer and spending time at the beaches. When Korey is not speaking at schools, colleges, and other organizations, he and Mary are active in jail volunteer work. Korey is also working on a degree in community psychology at St. Cloud State University, and is trying to write his first book based on his life, addiction, and recovery which he plans to be done with by 2012.Korey Sufka was a nominee for the Sartell Community Citizen of The Year in 2009. Korey has addressed such distinguished audiences such as Minnesota Teen Challenge, St. Cloud State University, Augsburg College, St. John's and St. Ben's University, church leaders of Minnesota, and a countless list of high schools throughout the country. Korey has also been featured on several live radio and television programs that have aired throughout the country. Korey has been honored by the Morrison County Record 4 times (2007, 2008, and twice in 2009), St. Cloud Visitor (2009), St. Cloud Times (2008), St. Paul Pioneer Press (2009), and recently received an award for the Top 10 Outstanding Motivational Speakers in Minnesota.".
