Babcock was born in Manitouwadge, Ontario in 1963. As of July 2014, he is the only coach to gain entry to the Triple Gold Club, guiding his Red Wings to the Stanley Cup in 2008, as well as leading Team Canada to gold at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and the IIHF world hockey championship in 2004.
