- Samir_Mitragotri abstract "Samir Mitragotri (born May 28, 1971) is a Professor at University of California, Santa Barbara, an inventor and an entrepreneur [1][2]. He is a researcher in the field of drug delivery and biomaterials. Mitragotri’s key inventions include technologies that make it possible to deliver medicines into the body without using needles. Many modern medicines including vaccines and insulin are delivered by needles, which cause pain, non-compliance and infections arising from their misuse. Mitragotri has developed technologies to deliver such medicines through skin patches, topical gels or oral pills [3]. Most vaccines and medicines cannot enter the body by simply rubbing onto the skin or swallowing because the skin and the gut are designed to serve as a barrier for entry. Mitragotri’s technologies are helping overcome this barrier. He developed ultrasound devices that can be placed on the skin to increase its porosity so that vaccines can enter the body (sonophoresis)and needle-free jet devices that can directly push the medicine into body (liquid jet injector). He also designed technologies to optimize topical formulations to safely deliver medicines into the body (INSIGHT) and invented a new class of peptides that can facilitate entry of medicines into skin cells. Collectively, Mitragotri’s inventions are making it possible to deliver medicines into the body in a painless way and offer a better alternative to needle injections for the treatment of various diseases including diabetes, infectious diseases and various dermatological conditions.Research in the Mitragotri laboratory is also focused on engineering of synthetic red blood cells and platelets. These are synthetic particles made from polymers and proteins that mimic key structural properties and certain functional properties of natural blood cells for potential applications in the detection and treatment of cardiovascular diseases [4]. Mitragotri has published over 170 publications in the area of drug delivery and biomaterials, has given over 230 invited presentations worldwide and is an inventor on 80 issued or pending patents. His publications are cited with an h-index of 61 [5]. Mitragotri is a co-founder of several companies that are developing products based on his inventions for detection and treatment of various human diseases. He received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at MIT and B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Institute of Chemical Technology.Mitragotri’s national and international awards include American Institute of Chemical Engineering’s Allan P. Colburn award, Controlled Release Society’s Young Scientist Award, selection by TR35 by the Technology Review Magazine as one of the world’s top young innovators in 1999 [6], election as a fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, election as a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors [7] and election as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Mitragotri serves on the editorial boards of several journals and currently serves as an Associate Editor of Journal of Controlled Release.".
