In 1950 she came to the United States on a Marshall Plan scholarship. She moved to Mexico City, where she received an M.A. in Romance literature from Universidad Nacional de México (1955) and later worked as an interpreter and teacher. Collard earned a Ph.D. from Harvard University (1964), and taught courses in Spanish and comparative literature at Brandeis University from 1962 until her death in 1986.
