Incoming correspondence pertains to the work of Sir Henry Thompson and instruments used in Bigelow's lithotrity operations; to his appointments; to a request for his support in the vivisection controversy; and to domestic matters, such as dog breeding and ordering harnesses for horses. Other papers include a galley proof of Bigelow's address to MGH trustees, document for a subscription to raise money for the physically handicapped, love poem and other personal manuscripts, and passports of Bigelow family, 1849-1869. Also contains a few letters belonging to William S. Bigelow.".

Bigelow was the leading surgeon in New England during his lifetime, the first in the U.S. to excise the hip joint, and known also for popularizing and making workable the operation of litholapaxy.".
