- catalog description "Williams (Harvard, M.D. 1849) served as a visiting district physician and later as surgeon to the Boston Dispensary, and he taught at the Boylston Medical School, 1850-1855. In 1850 he organized a class of Harvard medical students for instruction in diseases of the eye and became a professor at Harvard in 1871. Williams was one of the first among ophthalmic surgeons to use etherization as a general practice in cataract extraction, and also initiated a reform in ophthalmic therapeutics.".
