- catalog description "The Boston Dispensary was established in 1796, the third such institution in the country. Here free medicines and medical advice were given by selected physicians to the sick among the "worthy" poor who had been recommended by subscribers; the whole operation was supervised by a lay board of trustees. In 1930 the Dispensary formed an alliance with the Boston Floating Hospital and Tufts College to establish a medical center in Boston, which was named the New England Medical Center in 1953.".
