- catalog description "Bigelow (Harvard, A.B. 1806; Pennsylvania, M.D. 1810) was Rumford Professor and professor of materia medica at Harvard Medical School, 1815-1855, and published American Medical Botany, for which he drew many of the plates. He was visiting physician to the Massachusetts General Hospital and had a very large consulting practice. He wrote and lectured on educational reform, medical ethics, therapeutics, and botanical subjects; and he was a primary editor of the first U.S. Pharmacopoeia (1820). Bigelow designed Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Mass., where he is buried.".
