- catalog description "Edward Peirson Richardson, Sr. (1881-1944), AB, 1902, Harvard College; MD, 1906, Harvard Medical School, was John Homans Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and a surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital who specialized in abdominal, thyroid, and parathyroid surgery. He started his professional life in 1906 as a surgical assistant in the private practice of his father, physician Maurice Howe Richardson. At Massachusetts General Hospital, Richardson served as Chief of the Third Surgical Service in 1922, and, during the 1920's, Chief of the West Surgical Service, which became the first full-time surgical teaching unit at Massachusetts General Hospital. Richardson wrote articles on a range of surgical topics, especially abdominal maladies and thyroid and parathyroid surgery, and co-authored Diseases of the Thyroid (1929) with James H. Means.".
