- catalog description "The Window Shop opened in Cambridge, Mass., in 1939 to offer employment to and raise money for refugees from Germany and Austria. It developed into a restaurant and gift shop, managed by Elsa Brändström Ulich; in the mid 1940s, it added a Friendship House, which had a library and held lectures and English lessons; and provided medical insurance, retirement pensions, grants-in-aid, and scholarships. After unsuccessful attempts to aid Hungarian refugees in 1956 and Cubans in 1962, and faced with a deficit, the business closed and the property was sold to the Cambridge Center for Adult Education. The profits of the sale were transferred to the Window-Shop Inc. Scholarship Fund.".
