- catalog abstract ""This is the story of Dr. Elliott Shapiro, the tireless and controversial former principal of P.S. 19 in central Harlem (now P.S. 92 in its new building on the same street), and his crusade in education. The enrollment of P.S. 119 is ninety-six percent Negro, the remainder being Puerto Rican and Chinese. Poverty, sickness, and dirt are the basic realities for many of the children. Prostitution, alcoholism, and drug addiction haunt the streets. Elliott Shapiro has challenged these "disadvantages" head on. His progress has been remarkable, both in terms of his own school and with regard to the implications his methods have for all urban schools. He still believes our children are dying, but now he sees the possibility that some will survive. More can."--Back cover.".
