He recovered his eyesight but never returned to his studies. He served in the Civil War; after several attempts, he eventually became a highly successful businessman. He was well-known for his philanthropy, especially his founding of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. His philanthropy extended to Harvard as well. He donated Soldier's Field to Harvard and gave money for the building of the Harvard Union. He was given an honorary degree by Harvard in 1882 and served as a Fellow from 1893 to 1919.".
