- catalog abstract "This collection documents East's efforts to improve women's legal, political, and economic status, and reflects her service on various federal, state and international commissions on women, as well as her active participation on behalf of the Equal Rights Amendment and other major issues in a variety of women's organizations (e.g. National Women's Political Caucus, National Organization for Women Legal Defense and Education Fund). Included are correspondence, memoranda, speeches, reports, court cases and background material, calendars, mailing lists, photographs, audio tapes, and printed material relating to numerous women's issues and organizations; correspondence, speeches and other papers re: East's role in the presidential campaign of John Anderson; story notes and related material by journalist Vera Glaser; and photographs. There are very few personal papers. Series I-V of this collection include biographical information; appointment books; correspondence; speeches to professional organizations, educational and financial insitutions, clubs, government agencies, etc.; and writings, mostly book chapters and articles. Also included are background papers, press releases, minutes, reports, etc. concerning the President's Commission on the Status of Women, and the Interdepartmental Committee on the Status of Women. East's involvement with the Citizens' Advisory Council on the Status of Women is also documented in minutes, position papers and reports, correspondence, and court cases involving sex discrimination. Series VI-X of this collection include minutes, memos, staff lists, correspondence, court cases, clippings, testimonies, etc. concerning East's involvement in the National Commission on the Observance of International Women's Year (NCOIWY) and the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). Also included are correspondence, memos, articles, speeches, debates, mailing lists, etc., concerning issues such as abortion, child care, divorce, families, and gay rights advocated by East during the John Anderson Presidential campaign in 1980. Also documented is East's involvement in the National Organization for Women (NOW), the National Women's Political Caucus (NWPC), Women's Equity Action League (WEAL), etc. Series X includes photographs from the President's Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW), the NCOIWY, etc.".
