She moved to Boston and worked as a chiropodist and beautician until 1926, when she and her brother, Millard Fillmore Reid, opened the Modern Funeral Home on Dartmouth Street. After his death, she ran the business alone for thirty years, finally closing it in 1971. She also served as treasurer and vice-president of the Women's Service Club and as president of Harriet Tubman House. Her marriage to Dr. Horace MacKerrow lasted one year.".
