The documents are organized in file folders that correspond to a typewritten list of the documents labeled "Appendix." There is also a folder containing a typewritten list of 116 endnotes corresponding to handwritten numbers on the transcriptions and a typed one-page letter, dated May 29, 1935, from Albert Matthews to Samuel E. Morison regarding photostats made in 1922. The transcriptions also contain handwritten editing marks and related notes. Most of the photostat copies and typewritten transcriptions are reproductions of documents held in the Harvard College Papers, 1st series (UAI 15.100) and records originally held in the Ewer Papers at the New England Historic and Genealogical Society. The relevant Ewer Papers are now part of Records relating to Harvard College collected by Charles Ewer (HUM 94) in the Harvard University Archives.".

He was an authority on Harvard's early history and an active member of the American Antiquarian Society and the Massachusetts Historical Society. Matthews died on April 13, 1946.".
