- catalog description "The Harvard College seal was first created in the 17th century as a legal symbol of authentication to validate official documents created by the University's governing bodies. Between the earliest depiction of the College seal in 1643 and the more recent 1935 manifestation, there have been multiple designs of the seal, and while all have incorporated a shield, inscriptions including Harvard's current motto "Veritas," and embellishments, design details have varied over the years. The first design for a Harvard seal was approved by the Harvard Board of Overseers in 1643 and included a square shield emblazoned with three open books and the "Veritas" motto. The Charter of 1650 established the Harvard Corporation and authorized the body to create a new seal. The seal of 1650 depicts a square shield with three open books separated by a chevron and the motto "In Christi Gloriam." A new seal with the motto "Christo et Ecclesiae" was adopted in 1692. In 1843, President Josiah Quincy prompted the Corporation to reestablish the "Vertias" design of the 1643 shield as the College's seal, and though the Corporation returned to the 1692 design four years later, in 1885, the Corporation adopted a new seal designed by William Sumner Appleton (Harvard AB 1860) based on Quincy's 1843 seal that incorporated both the motto "Veritas" and "Christo et Ecclesiæ." The Appleton seal was updated by Pierre la Rose (Harvard AB 1895) in 1935 and continues to present as the College's official seal.".
