Family structure was emphasized using national samples of the non-institutionalized population in 1880. The data for the 1880 sample are contained in three data files in card-image format. Each data file is documented with SPSS-9 control cards. Three independent samples were drawn from the 1880 census with individuals selected from clusters defined by manuscript census page. File 1 is a national sample of the non-institutionalized population age 65 and over which has 1,501 cases with 123 variables. File 2, which has 129 variables, samples 804 blacks and 405 whites age 65 and over in 32 southern counties. File 3 has data for 472 southern urban blacks age 65 and over plus 315 whites, all drawn from a universe of cities over 4,000 population (17 PSUs). There are 123 variables.".
