- catalog description "Founded in 1912 by Josephine A. Bruorton, Helen Osborne Storrow, Frances Greely Curtis, and others, the Women's City Club of Boston promoted solidarity among women interested in the welfare of Boston and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. On May 15, 1913, the first 30 members formed the executive committee, chaired by Helen Storrow. The Club soon attracted a charter membership of 300 women who adopted a constitution and by-laws, confirmed the appointment of officers and committees, and established financial planning goals. The Club was incorporated in Massachusetts on December 1913, with more than 1,000 members. Housed at 39 and 40 Beacon Street in Boston, the Club provided rooms and dining facilities for its members and served as a venue for educational, civic, and social activities. Membership reached a peak of 5,000 shortly before the Great Depression and continued to thrive through the 1950s. It took a downtown in the 1960s and thereafter when operating costs exceeded revenue. The Club buildings were sold by the mid-1990s. Although its current membership is small, the Club continues to function as an associate of the Union Club of Boston, where it meets on a regular basis.".
