- catalog abstract "In the Muotatal, a small valley in the Canton of Schwyz in Central Switzerland, people perform a local variant of the Alpine song known since the 19th century as the "yodel". In the Swiss-German dialect of the Muotatal the songs of the traditional repertoire are called Juuz (pronounced "yootz") or by its diminutive Jüüzli. In this old pastoral culture "Yootzing" is closely associated with peasant life which follows the rhythm of the yearly summering of cattle on high mountain pastures. Fundamental values of local and national identity are crystallized in this important event : going up to the Alpine pasture. Its sounds are rich in symbolic meaning and emotional power. The "reconstructed" scenes in this film attempt to recall a recent past, even if it reinforces the idealized image which many Swiss people have of the mountains.".
