- catalog abstract ""This is a portrait of imperialism in its classical form, before the post-World War II upheavals transformed the relationships with dependent countries into what we now know as neocolonialism. It is about the economic conquest of China by European invaders, in the crucial years before the Treaty of Nanking in 1842 which placed the relations between the Celestial Empire and the Western "barbarians" on a footing that was to last for over one hundred years. The description of the driving force of expanding British imperialism is based in large part on the papers of the Jardine Matheson and Co., the largest of the firms doing buisness in Canton at the time and the only one to survive from "pre-treaty" days. They shed an intimate and unflattering light on the operations of foreign merchants in China, and on the long nistory of pillage that set the stage for the Chinese revolution."--Book cover, [p. 4].".
