- catalog abstract "Mortgage for 99 years by Thomas Sumner, alias Sumpner, of Eppinge in the county of Essex, yeoman, and Jane his mother, a widow, to John Searle of Chambers in the parish of Eppinge, gentleman, for £400 in hand and a yearly rent of a peppercorn of 4 pieces of land containing 50 acres called Perryfeild, Cobefeild, Cobefeild Slip, and Pervills Meade in Eppinge, bounded by a certain field called Perville Cowefeild to the north, a meadow called Cowberton Meade to the south, a grove called Peake Grove and a field Grove Feild to the west, and a piece called Crabbtreeshole and a croft called Gousecroft to the east. This lease to be void if Sumner pay to Searle the sum of £400 on or before the feast of St. John the Baptist 1638. With two notes of account taken on the reverse: (1) Dated 25 March 1637: to the effect that as of Christmas 1636 thomas Sumner still owed John Searle £169.18.8, but with Searle paying him £30 more, the total is now £199.18.8. With signatures of the parties and mark of Thomas Hensee. (2) Dated 27 November [1637?]: at which time there is due to John Searle the sum of £238.10.0, but on this day Searle has lent Sumner £50 more, so there is due to Searle "upon this please or mortgage the sume of £313.10.0 [sic]," in witness whereof Thomas Sumner signs his name. With witnesses: John Green, Andrew Benton, John Sumner.".
