As a student at UCLA, she became involved in the anti-Vietnam war movement, touring with Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland in the Free the Army show (1971-1973). In 1973 she founded, with Jeff Langley, Redwood Records and released the first of many albums. In 1975 she became involved in the women's music scene, performing at the annual fundraiser for the Los Angeles Woman's Building. Near toured broadly and performed around the United States and abroad, as well as at many women's music festivals and concerts. She has concertized widely as part of her struggle against nuclear weapons and for equal rights for all people.".
