- catalog description "Edward Delos Churchill, 1895-1972, MD, 1920, Harvard Medical School, was John Homans Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, and head of the surgical services at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Mass. During World War II, Churchill served as Surgical Consultant to the North African Campaign; in this role, Churchill developed the concept of delayed primary wound closure and early adequate debridement preventing infections in contaminated wounds. Churchill's research focused on thoracic surgery; he was one of the first physicians to employ surgery in treating tuberculosis and cancer of the lung. Churchill performed the first successful operation in the United States to relieve constrictive pericarditis, a heart ailment. In addition to his medical career, Churchill was appointed to the Hoover Committee to reorganize the bureaucracy of the government.".
