- catalog abstract "In this unique volume, ten essays bring a new perspective to the debate about standard of living in modern times. The strength of this volume is its comparative approach; each chapter examines evidence of health and welfare during and after industrialization in one of eight countries: the United States, Britain, Sweden, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Japan, and Australia. The introduction and conclusion put the chapters in comparative perspective. The authors examine several indicators of quality of life, especially real per capita income and health, real wages, education, and inequality. While they use traditional measures of health such as life expectancy and mortality rates, they also make extensive use of new anthropometric data - information about height, weight, and body mass index - to show changes in nations' well-being. The papers consider whether the course of national welfare during various industrialization experiences was governed largely by idiosyncratic factors and the cumulative influence of historical accidents that affected countries unequally - such as major wars or the acquisition and settlement of new territory - or whether similar causal structures prevailed. Aligning the results for particular countries by time period and by stage of industrialization establishes a common framework for study. From this structure the contributors analyze the significance of government policy for the course of economic growth and human welfare; the role of transportation and trade in spreading diseases; the contribution of diets to health and human growth; the ways in which inequality in wealth and income affected health; and ways that public health measures helped offset the undesirable side effects of crowded residences and workplaces. Health and Welfare during Industrialization signals a new direction in economic history, a broader and more thorough understanding of what constitutes standard of living.".
