- catalog description "Community and civil rights activist Ruth Marion Batson was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. From 1963 to 1966 she was the Commissioner of the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination. Batson was the first woman to serve as president of the New England Regional Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and was the founder and director (1966-1970) of Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity (METCO), a voluntary desegregation program exchanging students between urban and suburban schools. At Boston University, she was the director of the consultation and education program (1970-1975), director of the school desegregation research project (1975-1981), coordinator of the clinical task force, and associate professor at the School of Medicine's Division of Psychiatry. She was president and executive director of the Museum of Afro-American History in Boston (1987-1990). In 1969 she founded the Ruth M. Batson Educational Foundation, which provided grants to African American students, educational institutions, and community organizations.".
