- catalog abstract "This book is an edited compilation of 41 papers presented at an international conference on peptidases and the immune system. The multiauthored papers are either short reviews or short descriptions of new experimental results. The purpose of the conference was to bring together scientists from diverse areas of expertise to discuss newly identified roles of enzymes called peptidases in the regulation of immune system function. Data from this growing area of research have here to fore been scattered throughout the literature. The publication of the proceedings of this conference brings together a wealth of relevant information and provides a good snapshot of the state of research activity in the field. This book primarily will be of interest to research scientists in biochemistry, immunology, and related fields. The illustrations and photographs are well chosen and of good quality and references are up-to-date. Overall, the book is attractive and well-organized, although some chapters are missing abstracts. The book's chapters are short and consequently often lack sufficient experimental detail to assess the validity of the studies or to aid in the design of follow-up experiments. Readers interested in these details will have to wait for publication of full journal articles. However, this book is a valuable contribution to the field as it provides an overview of current issues. It is a must for researchers in the field, and valuable for non-specialists who want to get a feeling for this new and developing area of immunology.".
