- catalog description "The National Association of Women Lawyers is a voluntary legal organization that promotes the interests of women lawyers and advocates for women's rights. Formerly known as the Women Lawyers Club, the Association was founded in 1899 by 18 women lawyers in New York York City. Organized in response to discriminatory practices women encountered in the legal profession, founding members met informally to exchange views and provide mutual support. Association members also provided legal support for various feminist causes, includng women's suffrage and passage of the ERA. These concerns were featured prominently in their newsletter, the Women Lawyers' Journal, which began publication in 1911. Over the next decade, the Association's membership grew to include 300 individuals in thirty-two states, and its first national conference was held in 1923. From the 1940s through the 1950s, the Association expanded its role by becoming a member of the American Bar Association and participating in policy making decisions that impacted the lives of women. The Association also became an accredited non-governmental UN observer and consultant, formed an International Law Committee, and was a participant in the UN Commission on the Status of Women and the UN Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing. From a legal standpoint, the Association's numerous accomplishments include an increased number of women in the judiciary, the establishment of the right of women to serve on juries, and the enactment of child labor, equal wage, no-fault divorce, and property rights laws.".
