- catalog description "The Department of Legal Medicine at Harvard Medical School was formally established in 1937 with Alan Richards Moritz as the first appointed chair. The Department was founded to educate medical students in forensic pathology, a developing speciality. Members of the Department took part in or wholly conducted autopsies related to state and city-level incidents. In addition to regular graduate instruction, the Department also provided courses for policemen involved in murder investigations and law students interested in criminal law. Moritz left the Department in 1949 and Richard Ford took over the position. The Department dwindled from the mid-1950s into the 1960s until it was formally dissolved in 1967.".
