- catalog description "Adams House consists of five buildings: Apthorp House, Randolph Hall, Russell Hall, Westmorly Court, and Claverly Hall. The oldest part of Adams House, Apthorp House, was built in 1760, and was acquired by Harvard University in 1916. It became the master's residence in 1931, and as of 2007, is still used for that function. The other buildings were built between 1893 and 1902 as private "Gold Coast" dormitories rented to wealthy undergraduates in the early part of the twentieth century. They were known as the "Gold Coast," and provided a luxurious alternative to the dormitories in Harvard Yard and other private residence halls in Cambridge.".
- catalog description "Apthorp, Randolph, and Westmorly were combined to form Adams House when the house system was established in 1930. The house opened in 1931, but was not completed until 1932, when a new Russell Hall was built to replace an old Gold Coast building of the same name. The first house master, James Phinney Baxter, chose to name the house after John Adams and the Adams family. After 1959, Claverly Hall was used to house students from Adams, Quincy, Eliot, and Lowell Houses.".
