- catalog description "Joseph Baxter (1676-1745), a minister, missionary, and land speculator, was born on June 11, 1676 in Braintree, Mass. He received an AB from Harvard in 1693 and an AM in 1696. Baxter was ordained as the minister of Medfield, Mass. in 1697. In the early 1700s, Baxter began purchasing land and invested in iron works in New England. In 1717, Baxter first acted as a missionary to Native Americans in Maine, and he continued both his missionary work and ministerial work in New England for many years. Baxter died on May 2, 1745.".
