Mr. Timmerman was an electronics engineer who worked for RCA for 12 years before going into business for himself. The family moved frequently in the early years before settling in 1945 in northern Westchester county in New York State. His business failed to thrive, and Mrs. Timmerman earned a master's in early childhood education and was a preschool teacher and later taught early childhood education at Sarah Lawrence College. The third daughter, Diana (b. 1938), was a writer and poet and attended Carnegie Institute of Technology, Goddard College, Bard College, and Cornell, where she received a B.F.A. in 1963. She and her sister Gail traveled to Europe for three months in 1958.".
