- catalog description "Kajewski, a native Australian, was hired by the Arnold Arboretum to collect plant specimens from the several groups of islands. He collected in the New Hebrides Islands, the Solomon Islands, and the Santa Cruz Islands. Kajewski's travels began on February 11, 1928, in the New Hebrides Islands. His letters describe the challenges he met in his travels, including non-cooperative authorities, finding affordable help that was willing to undertake the kind of expeditions he was planning for, and the complications of preserving plants in a humid atmosphere. Early in his travels, he was also afflicted with malaria. Despite his removal to Australia in an attempt to recuperate, the fever lasted for the duration of the expedition. In September of 1931, he wrote Mr. Rehder to inform him that he had discovered a considerable amount of gold. Kajewski soon realized that he would not be able to collect specimens and supervise the mining of the gold. He resigned as explorer for the Arnold Arboretum, and was replaced by Mr. Leonard J. (L.J.) Brass.".
