From 1937 to 1957 he was professor of music history and director of choral activities in Montevideo high schools. In 1943 he began the systematic collection of Uruguayan folklore. He was professor of musical research and Uruguayan folklore at the School of Humanities, Department of Musicology, University of Montevideo, and of music history at the National Conservatory from 1946 to 1966. He published a considerable number of books and contributed to many dictionaries, encyclopedias, and books on music and folklore. On July 22, 1966, he died suddenly of a heart attack, at his home in Montevideo.".
