Among others, discovering social interests shared by groups of peoples is very important for social network systems. For it helps to connect people with common interests and encourages people to contribute and share more contents for the same interests. The main chanllenge to solving this problem comes from the difficulty of detecting and representing the interest of the users. The existing approaches are all based on the online connections of users and so unable to identify the common interest of users who have no online connections. In this paper, we present a novel, tag-based social interest discovery approach. Our innovation is based on the key observation that in a social network, human beings tend to use righ tags to annotate the contents that they are interested in. Our analysis on a large amount of real-world trace realves that in general, user-generated tags are consistent with the wen content they are attached to while more consice and close to the underdstanding and judgement of human beings about the content. This provides us the foundation of using frequent co-occurrences of user tags as the topics to mark user interests. We then present an architecture, ISID, which discovers the common user interests and then clusters users and their saved URLs into different interestbased clusters. Our evaluation shows that ISID is able to find the online topics of interests for users. In addition, the URLs in the clusters ISID produced have consistently high cosine-similarity and the users in the clusters form an interest-based community no matter whether they have any kind of physical connections in the real world.".
